When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a combination scientist/writer/artist/television reporter when I grew up. Today, I’m living my dream (except for the television reporter part—that wasn’t meant to be) as a senior biology major with minors in art, chemistry and writing at Central College in Pella, Iowa. At home, I enjoy spending time in the wild, writing poetry, taking pictures and cobbling my way through recipes. While I’ve long been a homebody, everything changed two years ago when the travel bug attacked. My Tropical Ecology course trip to Belize and Costa Rica in 2010 gave me so many remarkable experiences—in nature, in culture, and in life— that I was eager to repeat. Nevertheless, while I might feel ready right now to take on Mount Snowdon, I’m sure I still have a lot to learn about lessons in homesickness, tenacity, and exactly how small I am in the scheme of the world. But I believe that I can take on the challenge. Join me for the journey, stay for the misadventures!
